Trustees

The Boost Initiative works with trustees to help make their charitable assets more effective. The Boost Initiative introduces trustees to their local community foundation that will then advise trustees on their charitable giving and grant-making.

Boost offers trustees a variety of ways in which they can work with their local community foundation;

Original trust is wound up and a new, more modernised Fund is set up at a local community foundation

  • Boost can provide support to trustees who wish to wind up their trust
  • Boost provides advice and technical guidance, with support from the Charity Commission, and then facilitates the set up of a new Fund at a local community foundation with the remaining charitable assets
  • Grant criteria is set in line with the objectives of the original trust, but often  with more modernised objectives that are able to meet real need in the local community
  • Trustees are able to remain involved with the new Fund in the form of Grant Panel Members, making decisions on grant applications.

Trustees establish an administration and management agreement with their local community foundation

  • An agreement is made so that the trustees are able to take advantage of their local community foundation’s expertise in grant-making, and the community foundation deliver’s the charity’s grant-making on their behalf
  • The original charity remains a separate registered charity, but is able to take advantage of their local community foundation’s expertise, local knowledge and network of contacts, as well as benefitting from a reduction in administration.

Trustees appoint their local community foundation as the sole trustee of the charity

  • This option is often used when the trust itself is unable to dissolve, but it is struggling with its trusteeship. This can be either due to a lack of trustees, or because the trustees are failing to keep up with the administrative duties of managing a charity
  • The charity would remain a separate registered charity, but the community foundation would have the responsibility of being the trustee. Any former trustees have the option to remain involved by becoming Grant Panel Members.

If you are a trustee please contact Boost to see how we can work together to improve the effectiveness of your charitable trust.
